Be Sure To Keep Your Oral Health In Great Shape During The Holiday Season

The holidays are right around the corner and that excites a lot of people. It means that there will be holiday parties at work, gift exchanges, and plenty of food and treats that you have been waiting to break your diet for. However, it is also important to note that the holidays are also a time that you should betaking extra care of your teeth. After all, there is nothing more frustrating than starting the New Year with a cracked or chipped tooth that was the result of you not caring for your teeth during the holidays.

In order to keep your teeth in great shape during the holidays, here are something's to keep in mind. These tips given by Elizabeth Kilpatrick-Fox, DMD will help you keep your teeth healthy, without you having to worry about missing out on all of the holiday fun.

Be Ready For Anything

For those that brush their teeth at home regularly throughout the year, these habits may need to change once the holidays roll around. While it is also great to make sure that you brush your teeth first thing in the morning and as the last thing you do at night, this will have to change once it is holiday season. That is because you never know what treats or snacks you might be eating, or what kind of affects they might have on your teeth. If you start drinking too much eggnog or eating too many pies, then your teeth will be begging to be cleaned.

In order to prevent any issues from happening, consider keeping a dental kit with you at work or tucked away in your glove box. Inside of your dental kit should be a travel toothbrush, some toothpaste, and even a box of floss. The more that you have readily available in a given moment, the more likely it is that you will be able to keep up with the best oral care possible.

Watch What You Eat

It may not be any fun for you to hear that you should watch what you eat during the holidays, but it is a consideration that you should be sure to make. Before you reach for that second serving of cookies or that extra cocktail that your boss is offering you, be sure that you consider the affects that it will have on your teeth and oral health. You may have been waiting all year to break your diet, but doing so during the holidays can mean that you set yourself back quite a bit as the New Year rolls around.
Instead of gorging and eating unhealthy food, do your best to eat as clean as possible. Go for white meat instead of dark, eat plenty of vegetables, and know when enough is enough for the deserts. By doing so, you will be able to watch your waistline and your teeth, both of which you will be happy that you have once the holidays are over.

Make A Routine Dental Visit

If the last time that you visited your dentist was during the summer, then it is perfect timing for you to make an appointment during the holidays. Your dentist will take a look at your teeth and compare them to the last time you were in and then give you any advice that you should be considering during the holidays. In the event that something has happened between now and your last visit, your dentist can also suggest that you have it fixed as quickly as possible. Though it may not be ideal having an oral treatment during the holidays, it will certainly be better than running the risk of hurting yourself because you did not know that anything was wrong.
In addition, be sure that you take your kids along for the dental visit as well. Your children may be at even more risk for problems with their oral health during the holidays, so it is important that you help them to ensure that their teeth and gums are clean. Your child will also learn that it is important keep up with their teeth, even though the holidays are right around the corner.
