Help Your Young Athlete Keep Their Teeth In Great Shape

As a parent, there are few greater feelings than seeing your child out on a playing field scoring a goal or being an influential part of a successful team. Your child will learn a lot while playing sports, and many of these lessons will transition into other parts of their life that help them grow up. However playing sports is not all fun and games. In particular, playing sports as a child can lead to a variety of different oral health problems if the athlete does not keep up with their personal hygiene. For more details read here

Because most kids are not as eager to keep up with the health of their teeth as they should be, parents need to do what is necessary to keep up with their children and keep them diligently keep care for their oral health. Here are some tips that parents can consider in order to ensure that their children have the best oral health possible.

Keep Them Hydrated

Even though children are much more prepared for being active throughout the entire day, it is important to note that they still will get dehydrated if they are not drinking enough liquids. Unfortunately, some kids may opt for a soda sports drink to refuel, but these are not the best options for keeping up with oral health.

The reason that soda and sports drinks are not a good solution is because they are full of sugars and artificial colors. If your child is playing sports all daylong, their mouth is likely going to get dry and these harmful ingredients can wreak havoc on the mouth. Instead of these other options, parents should give their children water and make sure that they are staying hydrated as much as possible. Keep in mind that it is not just about when the child is on the court or field, but the best way to stay hydrated is by sipping on water throughout the day. By drinking more water children will have healthier teeth when they are on or off the field.

Watch Their Diet

If you do not watch them, most kids will likely load up on as many sweets and candies as they can throughout the day. However, parents know that candy and sweets are very bad for a child health and can lead to health concerns like obesity. But while candies and sweets can do damage to the inside a child’s body, they can also be very bad for their teeth and gums as well.
Candy and sweets can get stuck in-between a child’s teeth, which is then very difficult to get out without properly brushing. In addition, the candy and sweets will then stick to the teeth, which can accelerate problems that are associated with tooth decay. Parents that want to make sure that their kids have the best oral health should keep an eye on their children’s diet, and also provide them with healthy alternatives to choose from. Instead of sweets and candy, give your child crispy vegetables or healthy snacks, both of which will be much better for them.

Give Them A Travel Dental Kit

For the children athletes who are on a traveling team, parents may not be able to be around all of the time to keep up with their child’s oral maintenance. If this is the case, then parents should prepare a travel dental kit that their children can easily use while on the road. A travel dental kit should be different than the equipment that they use at home, that way there is no confusion or mix-up with which is which.
Part of a dental kit for children athletes should include a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, mouthwash, and even a dental pick. If they have all of these things, there will be no excuse for them to not keep up with their oral health while they are on the road.

Provide Them With A Mouthguard

Finally, parents should also consider outfitting their children athletes with a mouthguard. Some young athletes say that a mouthguard is not very comfortable, but it will help protect their teeth while they are on the filed or court. Remind your children that they only have one set of teeth, as well as the dangers that could occur if they do not wear a mouthguard, and it is likely that they will be much more willing to wear one.
