KEEPING YOUR TEETH HEALTHY WHILE AWAY AT COLLEGE

Going away to college is one of the most exciting times in a young persons life. They’ll finally be away from home, which means they can do whatever they do or don’t please. But while being away from home may mean not having a curfew or having someone watch what you eat, it also means that they won’t be making sure that you keep up with certain health standards that you should adhere to when you are on your own for the first time. Specifically, new college students should make sure that they are brushing their teeth and keeping up with oral care, especially once they are out on their own for the first time. Here are some tips to read for new college students who want to make sure that their teeth are as health as possible.

Find A Dentist Quickly
If you’ve been going to the same dentist your entire life, it may be a bit unnerving to start making appointments with someone new. However, the longer that you put off the dental visits, the more likely it is that you’ll think that you don’t have to visit your dentist to begin with. Instead, do your best to find a new dentist as soon as you get to your new college town. In some cases, your university may have a dentist on campus, or you can ask your parents to help you find someone who is within your dental coverage network. In either event, finding a dentist quickly will allow for you to have better oral health throughout your time in college.
Avoid Sharing Oral Care Products
When you get to college, it might seem as if your friends are overly eager to share things with you. This is especially the case if they don’t have certain things of their own. However, you should do your best to avoid sharing oral care products. Using someone else’s toothbrush could result in you transferring diseases or bacteria into your mouth, which could then lead to infections. Instead, be sure that you have your own oral care products, such as a toothbrush, floss, mouthwash, and toothpaste.
Eat Healthy
One of the great joys of most universities is the unlimited amount of food that you’ll be able to eat in the cafeteria. However, before you decide to make two trips to the desert table, consider loading up on fruits and vegetables as well. Not only will a healthy diet help you avoid putting on the freshman 15, but it’ll also keep your teeth clean and healthy as well. And what might be most important; your family will be happy to know that you are eating well while on your own.
Be Prepared
The more that you are prepared, the better off you’ll be to have the best oral health possible. Be sure that you are prepared for what you will do in a dental emergency, in the event that something happens to your teeth. Ideally, you’ll be fine. However, if something does happen, then you’ll be much happier knowing that you know what to do and how to get something fixed.
Talk To Your Parents
You may take great pride in the fact that you are out on your own for the first time, but you should still know when you need to talk to your parents. If you can’t afford to pay for toothpaste or get a new toothbrush, let your parents know. They may not be willing to transfer you a lot of money because they think that you’ll use it to pay your bar tab, but you can bet that they’ll be plenty happy to help you protect your teeth and gums.

College is going to be some of the greatest years of your life. But in order to make sure that it’s equally as safe as it is fun, keep these tips in mind for the best oral health possible.
